The spring sitting of the Alberta Legislature gets underway today and it could be a stormy beginning.

Government House Leader Brian Mason says on Monday the government will be asking for unanimous consent for a debate on pipelines which will be brought forward by Premier Rachel Notley.

"All members of the house will be given a chance to express confidence in our efforts to get this vital project underway," said Mason. " Now is the time for all of the members of the house to stand and be counted and show just how important an issue this is not just to Alberta but to Canada as a whole."

Mason adds they will not let down on their efforts to stand up for the provinces energy industry and the need to expand market access.

Government will be bringing bills forward to diversify the economy.

"Something previous governments didn't follow through on. Bills will address diversification in the energy sector and the necessities of upgrading here in Alberta."

Mason said there will be substantial changes to the house, mostly on the other side of the aisle.

"There is a new leader of the official opposition and he will take his seat in the legislature. As the Premier stated in December  when Mr. (Jason) Kenney became MLA for Calgary Lougheed we welcome him to the legislature and we look forward to debating the issues that are important to the province."

Mason says they hope the back-and-forth will be civilized and productive and just to reiterate he stresses the province is moving forward.
