The cycle of snowfall and chinooks has created a situation regarding bodies of water around town.

This flip-flop in weather is having an impact on storm ponds and rivers, and residents are once again being reminded to keep off.

Ken Thevenot, Okotoks Fire Chief, says it's alarming the amount of tracks he continues to see on the river.

"It really makes me nervous that people are still going on there and some people may not realize other individuals follow the tracks thinking it's safe on that river," he explains. "That river can be fast flowing and have some voids on there. I get there's some areas it is pretty shallow but having said that, there are those areas with voids and it can be very problematic."

Town crews have been hard at work to keep drains free flowing to help combat the melting snow and water forming on local roads. Residents who spot any issues or have questions can call the Town at (403) 938- 8952.

Thevenot says residents need to be careful when they're out walking around due to slick conditions associated with the weather.

"The slip and fall accidents this time of year seem to increase so be careful of your footing, especially in the evenings when you can potentially get some of that black ice you can't see on the ground, and make sure that you're aware of how that snow is melting before you exit your house or commercial building."

This past week the Okotoks Fire Department responded to 24 calls including two vehicle collisions, two public hazard calls, 15 medical responses, one odour investigation, and four alarm system activations.
