Downtown Okotoks will get a little bit of aboriginal culture Wednesday.

Shawl dancers will take over the Boot Hill Gallery parking lot performing numerous traditional movements.

Owner Carol Bishop says it's something else to see up close.

"They will do a performance of a pow-wow dance and at the very end they'll do a friendship dance which means that people can participate with that dance as well," she says. "Not only do they do the dance but they explain their headgear and their outfits in what it means ad how they earn them so it's also a great learning experience."

She says Shawl dancers bring plenty of history with them.

"It's about the culture, about what they've developed over the years. Each dancer has a different dance and performance that they explain so the culture of the native dance is amazing and the colours is absolutely stunning and beautiful."

Cobs bread will be supplying free snacks to those who attend along with McDonalds providing coffee for patrons Bishop says and the dancers won't be hard to find.

"Just in front of the store in the parking lot, we'll have it blocked off and we'll have a few chairs for those folks who need it. We've got a few seniors groups coming but we welcome absolutely everybody. You can take pictures afterwards which is really nice for a lot of the tourists."

The event starts at 10 a.m.
