Volunteers around Okotoks are taking this opportunity to talk about why they choose to volunteer and the various or unique positions available.

Bev Brecka, volunteer for the Rowan House, says her job at the emergency shelter is basically to do crafts and meet people.

"What I do mostly is crafts with the ladies, that's my primary volunteer activity with them" Brecka says "I also do the events, so I like to get out into the community and meet all new people."

Brecka started to volunteer because her belief in equality and women's rights drove her to pursue a position at the shelter.

"I really like being there because I like to see the ladies relax and smile. I think it's important for them to know that they do have people who support them and it really helps a lot."

Co-volunteer Brandy Dunne says she volunteers because right now, she has extra time and why not?

"I volunteer because I have no reason not to, and I enjoy it!" Dunne adds "I have some time right now because I'm going back to school and I only need to volunteer one morning a week!"

There are positions for anyone, in different departments for the Town, both Dunne and Brecka say if you've ever thought about volunteering, the hardest part is making that first phone call, or applying.

Later this week we'll be featuring an inspiring young lady, Keira Gushulak, who is 13 years old and spends her time volunteering at the swimming pool.
