Rowan House Emergency Shelter already has plans for the donation they received from 100 Women Who Care Okotoks and Area.

Executive Director Sherrie Botten says she's thrilled Rowan House was chosen and the $3600 will be used for prevention programs in schools.

"The dollars that have been raised here is going to go to our prevention programs. We have a branch as prevention program that goes into schools and educates children and youth on bullying and healthy relationships."

She prevention programs are a vital part of their organization.

"A big part of what Rowan House Emergency Selter does is prevention. So, of course we provide support to families that come into the shelter because they need the housing part, but prevention is a big part of what we do. And we truly believe that the only way we're going to make a difference in domestic violence is through early education."

Botten says Rowan House has prevention programs in most schools in the Foothills. She says she's honoured 100 Women Who Care chose this organization.

"We know the different charities in the area and they're all so, so valuable. So to be able to be chosen for this is really quite special. I personally love the idea of 100 women who care. It's 100 caring women that want to support organizations in their community. I think it's pretty powerful when we see women supporting women, and that's certainly what we do at Rowan House."

Botten says Rowan House runs prevention programs in elementary, junior high, and high schools, but does presentations for service clubs and other groups as well. She says all of their prevention work is at no cost. She says they'll also come out and speak to any groups that want to learn more about domestic violence or what they do at Rowan House and how they can help.
