A rooftop camp out over the weekend brought in thousands of dollars for the United Way.

Okotoks Mayor Bill Robertson and The Eagle 100.9 afternoon show host Logan Coutts battled the elements on the roof of Sobey's from Friday until Sunday at noon.

Coutts says they greeted passersby from their rooftop camp out with a megaphone and the response and encouragement was amazing.

"It was awesome," he says. "People would come out and say, 'You're doing a great job, thanks so much'."

Not surprisingly, Coutts says he and the mayor faced some challenges during their almost 48 hours camped out in a tent on a rooftop.

"Occupying your mind was one thing," he explains. "But another thing was the weather and that didn't really cooperate on the second night. The first night it was wonderful, but that rain came in and the wind came in and it was just madness."

Coutts and Mayor Robertson climbed up onto the roof Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock and came down Sunday at noon, with help from the Okotoks Fire Department.

The United Way/Okotoks Partnership is thrilled to share that they have exceeded the goal of $10,000 through the 2017 fundraising initiatives.

This was made possible through the outstanding support of the Okotoks community.  Many businesses contributed to the success of these events, and none would have been possible without the efforts and dedication of the many volunteers that helped out.  Volunteers from agencies that receive United Way funding participated in the events, and played a huge role in the reaching the 2017 goal.

And, of course, special thanks go out to Mayor Robertson and Logan Coutts, who volunteered their time for the Rooftop Rescue and persevered through less than ideal weather conditions.
