The Town of Okotoks and MD of Foothills are ready to give residents a taste of Champion Park this weekend.

The Town and MD are hosting an open house to show residents the 52 acre landmark they were gifted in late December from the Knowlton family that has vintage CP rail cars, a train station, and a large park.

Janette Messer, community programs and events manager for the Town of Okotoks, says she's excited to show residents what the land holds.

"I know that people have been driving past that lot with the trains wondering what it was all about so as it's been gifted to the Town of Okotoks and the MD we thought it would be great for our residents to provide an opportunity to actually come and visit."

Messer says it'll be a while before a definite end result is in place for what the future of the park will hold.

"Ultimately there will be a non-profit society that will be put in place to kind of manage the operation," she explains. "There will be a lot of research that needs to be done to really create an identity for the park moving forward and at this point in time no decisions have been made, we're just quite excited to be able to let the community come and have a little look."

The open house will have children's games and activities, a chance for people to go through exhibits, and train tours. Light lunch will be provided but visitors are encouraged to bring their own picnic lunches.

The open house goes from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. and residents need to register for bussing as there's no parking available at the site.

Busses to Champion Park will depart from the Okotoks Recreation Centre.
