Many residents have been voicing their concerns regarding the new green organic waste cart being introduced for the Universal Cart Program in October.

Those who already have a blue recycling cart and a black garbage cart will receive a green cart for organic waste at no extra cost. Those who don't currently have a blue cart will receive both a blue and green one for an additional $7.25 a month.

Jason Brown, Drake Landing resident, says the green carts are a great idea to help the environment.

"It's essentially going to cut down on the use of the landfill which we're running out of space for so you can add about 10 to 15 years onto the life of a landfill by using this so it cuts down on the space we need for putting garbage in."

According to the Town of Okotoks, approximately 45% of household waste is organics while 35% is estimated to be recyclables.

Brown adds the program is a valuable addition for the Town.

"I think honestly everyone should be offering it because it's something positive going forward. I haven't done a lot of in-depth looking into it but again it's something that's required, I think, so we should all be doing it."

Currently 67% of Okotoks households already use a blue cart and will receive their green cart in September at no extra cost.
