Good news for anyone heading out to Kananaskis this weekend, as Alberta Parks and Transportation have reopened recreational use highways.

Two sections of highway K-Country were closed over the winter, but reopened on May 15.

Highway 66 from the Junction of Powderface Trail to the Elbow Falls Day Use area is now open, as well as the Highway 546 extension from the Junction Creek Day use area to the Sandy McNabb Recreation Area, also known as Sheep River Road.

Anna Neale, Alberta Transportation Spokesperson, says these two sections of highway are closed annually.

"Some sections of provincial highways and public roads in Kananaskis are closed over the winter months annually. These roads are primarily built to be accessed in the summer for recreational use, and they were never built to be used as main roads year round."

Neale shares any users of these reopened sections of highway this weekend should use extra caution as they could be crowded areas.

"Watch for recreational users it's the beginning of the May Long Weekend so there's going to be people camping and hiking, and make sure you watch for wildlife also."

A section of Highway 40 from the Peter Lougheed Provincial Park to Highwood House Junction will remain closed until June 14.
