Alberta RCMP have released numbers for traffic infractions over the Easter long weekend, and the results are positive.

Overall, almost every traffic infraction from impaired driving, to seat belt violations were down from 2015.

Speeding tickets were even down from 522 in 2015 to 102 this year.

K Division RCMP Strategic Communications Unit Member Cpl. Hal Turnbull says Alberta drivers should be praised.

"I think it's a testament to the drivers on our roads, the Albertans themselves," he says. "Leaving a little extra time at the start of a journey to get there without speeding, making sure that everyone's belted up in the vehicle, child seats are secured, and driving accordingly to the road conditions and the traffic volume."

He says it's validating the safety of Alberta drivers, however, that's not the only aspect of the reduced numbers.

"This past weekend we had pretty good weather throughout the province, and given an early melt of snow and ice, the roadways have been pretty good. So as far as weather-related collisions that was definitely down."

Cpl. Turnbull says while the numbers are down now, they could still rise.

"There are some files that still have yet to be tallied and added to the totals here, but the drop is very pleasing to see at this stage of the game. I think people by in large are getting the message to drive safely on Alberta's highways."
