Warm temperatures mean we'll finally start to make a dent in the amount of snow in Okotoks.

Steady temperatures above zero mean ice is melting fast and posing a safety hazard.

Ken Thevenot, Okotoks Fire Chief, says while he's made this clear numerous times, people need to stay clear of the river.

"I drove past the river and you can see it's opening up more everyday so you'll have the ice shelf around the edges that can be very deceiving and can give way fairly quickly. The integrity of that ice is just not there if there's a void underneath it."

The same danger of thin ice with water flowing underneath also applies to storm ponds.

Thevenot says residents should keep their eyes peeled on storm drains.

"If they're starting to pool just ensure the storm drains are clear of any snow or debris that may be on the street and interfere with the flow of water. If there's any problems they can contact the Town."

This past week the fire department responded to 23 calls including five alarm system activations, 11 medical responses, one fuel spill, one garbage fire, one public service call, one call where nothing was found on site, and three motor vehicle collisions.
