It was a relatively calm long weekend for the Okotoks Fire Department.

Pat Macisaac, Deputy Fire Chief at the Okotoks Fire Department, says the department responded to a total of 11 calls, including two grass fires, five motor vehicle collisions, and four medical incidents.

He says no property was significantly damaged from the grass fires, and no serious injuries were reported from the collisions.

Macisaac says even with the rain expected for the next couple days, conditions are still crispy.

"The grass fires that we were responding to certainly weren't intentionally set, they were accidental," he says. "It's just keeping cognizant of motors... ATV's can set off fires, keeping your camp fires small and contained, just being extra cognizant when conditions are dry."

He says with one of the fires they responded to, it's believed it sparked from a hay baler's bearings that got heated, which is why it's important to make sure equipment is properly maintained to help to reduce the risk of igniting grass fires.

Macisaac says he's pleased with how most residents behaved over the weekend.

"From our perspective it wasn't a real busy long weekend and people were, in general, being very careful... we're lucky we didn't have any major incidents," he says.
