Despite the news and impact directly affecting the City of Calgary, the Alberta government's commitment of green transit initiatives helps not just Mother Nature but also the the Town of Okotoks.

$430 million will be given to the city to improve all means of transit in and around Calgary.

Okotoks Mayor and Chair of the Calgary Regional Partnership Bill Robertson says Okotokians making the daily trip into the city will see some improvements on their way to work.

"The bulk of that is going into the City of Calgary but really that is regional transportation because 47% of Okotoks residents commute into the city for their place of employment," he says.

Robertson says the announcement last week by the province is a huge boost in regional transportation.

"Every enhancement to the transit system whether it would be buses, LRT or whatever within the City of Calgary benefits Okotoks residents because even if somebody is driving all the way to their place of work, a better transit system means there will be less vehicles on the roads."

Robertson says the initiatives do lead the bigger picture of doing more for the environment.

"Those roads won't be as busy, every person that gets into a public transit vehicle takes another vehicle off the road so there's less congestion and of course there's a lower carbon footprint for when we have mass transit."
