The Town of Okotoks has already laid the groundwork for this years water rebate program.

The water rebate program began a number of years ago with the goal of encouraging homeowners to reduce their overall water consumption.

Nancy Weigel, corporate and strategic services director for the town, says there's a limit for each home.

"It's typically up to $200 per household, most of the rebates are 50%, up to that maximum," she says. "The most common rebate programs that we have are for rain barrels and organic or inorganic mulch."

Weigel says usually the amount the Town budgets for the program is fully used.

"We budget $10,000 per year for the rebate program. Most years it's 100% utilized, last year there was a small amount of money that was not utilized and that's been the only time."

While the program doesn't officially open until May, items purchased from January to April are still applicable as long as residents keep their receipts.
