What started out as a friendly competition between community members has grown into so much more.

A traditional community event, the Priddis and Millarville Fair goes this weekend at the Millarville Racetrack in conjunction with the farmer's market.

Suzanne Sills, Volunteer Organizing Committee Chair, says it all started as a bread baking competition.

"This is 110th year for the fair, so there's a ton of tradition, it started out a competition between a few people on who could make the best loaf of white bread and it grew from there," she says. "We still have that white bread class in our bench show, and we always have lots of entries each year."

Sills shares the fair is very much a family event, that generations of families have participated in.

"We have generations of families that come, so we have as many as four generations in one family that compete against each other or collectively. They start exhibiting at pre-school age, and we still have people exhibiting and volunteering and well into their eighties."

The event has traditionally been a one day fair on a Saturday, however last year they expanded into Sunday as well.

Sills says there are a number of activities running on Saturday Aug. 19, and Sunday Aug. 20.

"It is an old fashioned country fair, we have bench exhibits which include photography, home cooking and baking, field crops, vegetables and fruits, flowers that people will bring in their entries and compete for ribbons and bragging rights. We also have livestock competitions in dairy goats, beef cattle, and sheep, and we also have riding events, and tractor pull."

The fair runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.
