Wednesday May 3 marks the one year anniversary of the devastating wildfire that forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes and businesses in Fort McMurray.

Premier Rachel Notley was there to commemorate the event and says first and foremost we need to remember those who lost their lives.

"Emily Ryan, who was 15 and Aaron Hodgson who was 19, we also remember all that the fire took from people, their homes, their baby photos, and all the belongings that helped to anchor so many cherished memories," the Premier said.

Notley also praised fire fighters and other first responders from around the province, the country and the world who showed up in droves to help beat back the fire that came to be known as "The Beast."

"Even under extreme pressure, facing extreme dangers Albertans look out for one another. We showed the world that the spirit of hard work and cooperation that has made this region Canada's economic region is a spirit that values the health, safety and well being of every person in the entire community."

She says residents have shown their resiliency and will continue to do so
