High River RCMP have a message for those knocking down and destroying election signs around town.

Don't do it.

Sergeant Ryan Dlin says if they see you, you will be arrested.

"It's still a criminal offense. It's considered mischief, depending on the number of signs, whether it's under or over $5,000. But it is in fact a criminal offense and the person would be charged."

Dlin says if they catch you, it could cost you more than a slap on the wrist.

"Depends on criminal record. If you have a history of doing this kind of thing, you could be looking at jail time for sure. If it's a continuing offense, you'll be looking at remand on our point to keep you in custody to prevent the continuation, or hefty fines."

He says with the recent damage to signs in town, nobody made an official complaint.

Dlin says even if you don't think police can do anything, it's worth reporting if you see something vandalized.
