If you're looking to get in shape, heading to the library isn't the first thing most think about.

The Okotoks Public Library has a Pole Walking Program, a walking group, and poles available to rent out for three week periods.

Assistant librarian Lara Grunow says you can use them just about anywhere.

"We have 20 sets of urbban walking poles here at the library that patrons can check out for a three week period of time," she says. "They can be used to walk along our pathways here in Okotoks, as well as take them in to the mountains and use them for hiking."

Grunow says the idea of hosting a walking group came from a sister library in Turner Valley.

"We thought that it was awesome and that we could do that here in Okotoks, it's a great way for individuals to go out and get some excercise, and join a community of walkers."

Says pole walking is 46% more effective than walking alone.

"Pole walking is said to use 90% of your muscles, because when you push down on thwe pole as you walk you engage all of your arm muscles and your core muscles."

The library is also looking for a volunteer to lead a pole walking group, for more information contact Laura Grunow at 403-938-2220, or lgrunow@okotokslibrary.ca.
