The playground at the Dewinton Community Hall will be getting a makeover.

The Dewinton Community Association was presented with a cheque for $26,249 by Highwood MLA Wayne Anderson on behalf of the Alberta government on Friday to go towards making the playground safer for children.

Chelsea Mcleod with the association says the new additions will help the playground cater to younger users.

"We're going to be removing two pieces and installing two new pieces that are more up to date with today's safety standards and are more appropriate for the kids that are using it from the preschool, there isn't a lot of equipment for ages two to five currently."

Some features of the new equipment includes a rock climbing wall and three slides.

Mcleod says it was a donation from a community member that helped their fundraising efforts for the playground take off.

"We've had a lot of community support, we've had companies donate their time and services for removal of the old equipment, scraping the gravel back, any landscaping touch ups that'll need to be done afterwards," she explains. "We also did fundraising, we did a silent auction at the Dewinton Western Dance in June and we had a lot of community support."

Construction on the playground is expected to start in the spring.
