The Turner Valley Legion is holding a meeting Thursday night to get things started for 'Birth of a Nation Day'.

Birth of a Nation Day is on April 9 where this year it's the 99th anniversary of the battle on Vimy Ridge.

Coordinator for the event Gordon Day says it's important for the community to recognize and celebrate one of the biggest days in Canadian history.

"All of the other forces backed off but the Canadians took over and literally captured Vimy Ridge which ultimately lead to the end of WWI," he says. "So the Canadians were responsible for defeating the Germans in WWI."

Day says that time in history was the beginning of Canada becoming its own sovereign nation after serving under the British Commonwealth prior.

He hopes the meeting will create some great ideas for the upcoming anniversary of that battle.

"We're going to organize our parade route, we have a short route and we want to know what date it's going to be and who our main speakers are going to be just to get the whole thing all planned and I was hoping more people would come out and get involved with it."

Day says he encourages anyone with interest to come out and help.

"We're trying to get things organized, we're going to get the Cubs, the Scouts and all the Cadet cores all parading with the legion and we're also designing a flag."

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the Legion.
