Okotoks is about to see it's first Pride celebration as the countdown begins for Pride in the Park on Aug. 26th.

Foothills Rainbow Connection is a group of local individuals who are organizing the event.

Marissa Johnston from Foothills Rainbow Connection says the event will be family friendly and support local talent.

"We will have a kids zone with activities at 2 and 4 pm, also we'll have an art zone taking place all day where participants can take part in different community based art projects." Johnston adds "On the main stage we'll have 2, 1hour drag performances, 3 half hour musician sets and a drum and bass DJ."

Johnston says there has been some apprehension in the community when it comes to the pride celebration, but she wants people to know that it's an all-inclusive event and welcome to anyone!

"I'm from Okotoks and I have a pretty good feel for what people will draw the line at.  Nothing inappropriate will be happening and it's just going to be a great day to celebrate diversity." Johnston says that means it's all inclusive. "That's not just gay, queer or trans people, that's straight people too, as allies are a huge part of our community."

The majority of the community has shown support for the celebration as businesses and churches have stepped up to sponsor the event, which Johnston says, is the first of it's kind in Okotoks.

"It's about the diversity that does exist in our community and celebrating that, so everyone feels safe walking down the street holding their partners hand. It's just simple, love is love and I think our community does realize that, but it's also something that we should celebrate."
