The countdown to the Municipal Election is on, as nomination day is just one month from today, Aug. 18.

On September 18 nomination papers must be submitted in council chambers between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.

Cathy Duplessis, Legislative and Policy Services with the Town of Okotoks says there's a few things to bring.

"Any interested people who want to run for the office of councillors of Okotoks, or for the Mayor's position can come and submit their nomination papers. The papers need to be signed by at least five electors from the town and they need to accompany your deposit which is $250 for councillor, and $500 for mayor."

Duplessis says so far the has only been one candidate who filed a notice of intent to run, however that doesn't mean more individuals won't join the race, as anyone can submit nomination papers next month.

"There is no deadline for the notice of intent, but of course once nomination day passes there's no need to file a notice of intent. The permits you to start spending money on your campaign and fundraising."

Duplessis adds there will be a candidate information session on Sept. 7, at 6 p.m. in council chambers for anyone wishing to learn more about candidacy.

She expects campaign signs will start to come out shortly after nomination day, as the election runs four weeks after.

The 2017 Okotoks Municipal Election is on Oct. 16.
