The light is almost at the end of the tunnel for the new Okotoks Annexation agreement with the M.D. of Foothills.

All important documents were signed and sealed in late 2016 but now it's the waiting game for the Town to get the official stamp of approval from the province.

CAO Elaine Vincent says there's one step left for the annexation process to be completed.

"The Municipal Government Board then needs to do it's process and once they sign off on it then it's sent to Cabinet for approval," she says. "We did receive word late last week that the Municipal Government Board has signed off on the Okotoks annexation."

The annexation agreement has the Town taking in almost 2,000 acres with growth coming to the north, east and west and includes land south of Highway 7, the site of the contentious Windwalk development.

Vincent says the provincial cabinet has the final say if they agree with the annexation report delivered.

"We don't know if it means if they approved it as we asked with partnership with the M.D. we don't know if they've changed position or if they've approved it as is. So that's still an unknown but we do at least know it has proceeded in the next step of the annexation process."

As for the timeline of when that decision will arise should come in the spring time.

"The median timeframe here is about two months, so we're looking at around 60 days so we're anticipating here the end of April and the beginning of May, we should have an annexation order."
