As of September the On-it Transit Pilot Project will be up and running for the Foothills area.

The pilot project will connect the towns of High River, Black Diamond, Turner Valley and Okotoks with the city of Calgary for the next two years to test if this is a transportation option that will benefit Foothills residents.

Okotoks Mayor and Chair of the Calgary Regional Partnership Bill Robertson says the on-it transit system will co exist nicely with the Southland Transportation that drives commuters from Okotoks to downtown Calgary once in the morning and in the evening during week days.

"The On-it is going to compliment that system and the pilot project that is subsidized by the provincial government due to $500,000  that they are giving us a year for this transit pilot. Buses are going to run from High River through Okotoks and into the city of Calgary linking up with the Calgary LRT system at the very south end."

The town will be evaluating the project for the next two years to see if it's a viable option for the community.

Robertson says the project could burn out before the two years but he doesn't see that happening because of all the beneficial factors.

"There are a few factors. First of all the economy, it's not great and nor is it an option for many people to have private transportation so there are those individuals in our community that can't afford private transportation. So public transportation is an option to help them get around. Secondly, there are those who are environmentally conscience and choose not to have private transportation because of the environmental footprint."

A display for On-it Transit will be at the Taste of Okotoks for residents to see and ask any questions they may have.
