Okotoks residents are out recognizing the importance of being active no matter what the season is.

Wednesday marks the tenth year for Winter Walk Day which helps to celebrate Albertans who get moving despite the cooler weather.

John Begg, communications specialist with the Town, says he's seen a lot of dedicated walkers throughout the day.

"It's been really busy, we've had people here since seven o'clock this morning and earlier and it's gotten busier throughout the day," he says. "It's nice to see this much participation out of residents from Okotoks."

The minutes each walker completes get submitted to Shape Alberta to show how long Okotokians walked to try to be the most active community in the province.

Mark Doherty, community events coordinator, says walking has multiple health benefits.

"We know walking strengthens your heart, reduces heart disease risks and strokes, typically diabetes is reduced by walking and exercise, studies even suggest exercise and walking can reduce cancer risks, and it helps you lose weight."

Last year over three million minutes were logged on Winter Walk Day throughout the province.
