The Town of Okotoks has received recognition for its conscious effort towards promoting healthy choices.

The Town was honoured with the Choosewell Award from the Alberta Parks and Recreation Association for the healthy food initiatives offered at the KC Eatery concession in the Okotoks Recreation Centre.

The award is the association's way of celebrating the efforts and achievements of communities that promote healthy eating and active living.

Donna Racette, client services manager at the Rec Centre, says the Town has worked hard to create awareness about the food choices their facilities offer.

"In our contract with our beverage suppliers it's noted they're required to provide 50% of choices that are in line with Alberta nutritional guidelines for our vending machines, as well at the Recreation Centre here and Pason Centennial Arena 50% of our menu selection is required to be healthy food choices."

Racette says it's important these choices turn into a lifestyle.

"I think it's important in the balance of our work lives and everything else that there are lots of opportunities to be active, but what's a big component of that is the food services and types of food choices that are available and education that goes along with that to support healthy and active lifestyles."

This is the second time the Town has been given the Choosewell Award.
