It's been a very busy summer for the Okotoks RCMP Department as they saw a few more areas of crime hit during the last three months.

Robberies, break and enters along with every day events that can occur in town

Okotoks Sgt Sukh Randhawa says they had quite a few calls their way.

"During the summer we did see a slight rise in crime," he says. "Some of the activities like armed robberies, break and enters they did spike up a little bit,  that was because of the summer time and we see a lot of spill coming over from Calgary because of the proximity of Okotoks to a major city."

When it comes to the overall safety of Okotoks, Randhawa says not to worry.

"Overall I would say the community is still very safe, the public should not be alarmed or worry about what's happening in the community. The RCMP members of Okotoks are out and about all the time and they're doing the best to control all kinds of activitities that are going on."

Randhawa says there's a few reasons lately why crime has taken that slight rise in activity.

"The economy has of course taken the downturn as we all know and based on that, the increase in criminal activity has gone up for various other reasons. Whether if someone wants to steal stuff via break and enter, get it and sell them and make money but that should not be the option."

Randhawa says with break and enters happening in homes locally and out in rural areas it doesn't hurt to be prepared and have some form of security system or camera set up that can help RCMP bring those responsible to justice.
