Okotoks will be showcasing its strong hockey following and sense of community on a national level in the new year.

The town has been selected as one of 25 locations across the country to host the Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour.

Rogers and Sportsnet will roll into Okotoks for two days with the event featuring local celebrities, NHL alumni, family activities, and a live broadcast with Ron MacLean and Tara Slone of the Calgary Flames versus Ottawa Senators game.

Tanya Thorn, Councillor for the Town of Okotoks, says the event will be a great platform to show off the community.

"It's hugely exciting for our community to get to showcase our community passion, what our community does on a national stage... so I think that's super exciting and it's also really great to be hosting organizations like Rogers in our community and be able to showcase to them what we do and how we bring community together."

Other Alberta locations selected for Hometown Hockey include Lethbridge, Leduc, Strathcona County, and Enoch Cree Nation.

Thorn says the event brings her back to when Okotoks was in the running for Kraft Hockeyville.

"I think back to Kraft Hockeyville and how passionate our community was about that project. This is sort of the same thing because it's about televising and showcasing what hometown hockey looks like and we do a really good job of that here in Okotoks."

Rogers Hometown Hockey will take place Feb. 23-24, 2019.

Okotoks Online will stay up-to-date with details on event times and locations as they are announced in the future.
