Ryan Scott moved to Okotoks when he was five years old and went through school in Okotoks by attending Percy Pegler Elementary, going to junior high here and finishing up at Foothills Composite High School.

After high school Scott moved to Toronto where he pursued his acting career, and while auditioning for a Radio Shack commercial he met his wife Jeanette Sousa.

The couple have now written, produced and starred in the new Canadian, independent movie "A Date With Miss Fortune".

Scott says for big Hollywood type productions they are given an extremely large budget to promote and advertise the movie, but it is different when it comes to small independent films.

The couple says instead of having one release date for the movie like big Hollywood films, they are doing a roll out city-by-city.

"They started us off in Toronto, and we had our premiere on January 28th and then opened in three cinemas on the 5th of February, and we sold out almost all the screenings," Scott says.

Scott says they were out performing many big-name Hollywood movies.

The movie opens Friday at Scotabank theatre in Chinook Centre in Calgary.

Sousa says people should go and watch the movie.

"It is so important for people to come out and support the film, because if we don't have those numbers then Monday morning we get the call and are told that we are out," Sousa says.

In the film along with Scott and Sousa are Canadian actors Nelly Furtado, who makes an appearance as Maria (Sousa's) cousin, and George Stroumboulopoulos who plays Maria's ex fiance, along with others.

Scott and Sousa say if you enjoyed "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" or "Meet the Parents" you will enjoy "A Date With Miss Fortune".

"It is a fun film that you will be smiling the whole way through. It is a cross-cultural romantic comedy, and it is very relatable which is probably the biggest compliment we have gotten," Sousa says.

Sousa says they have had the movie compared to them as the Portuguese version of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding".

The movie plays Friday and Saturday at 1:45, 4:15, 7:00 and 9:45.
