Residents in the Town of Okotoks can now find out if their house is heat efficient or deficient.

The Town released its MyHEAT Energy Efficiency Platform Monday which shows every house in the community where heat is either escaping and burning more energy or staying at healthy, green efficiency standards.

Corporate and Strategic Services Coordinator for the Town, Nancy Weigel, says all you need to do to find your heat score is follow the links on the Town's website.

"You can either search via the map or you can punch in your home address and you will get a heat map, a heat score and some energy efficient tips to lower your heat score," she says.

The map will show a grid of exactly where heat is escaping from your home through different colour schemes, with red being the worst and blue having strong efficiency.

Weigel says where there's red, that's a sign to maybe look into making some adjustments to lower your heating bill.

"It's typical that some heat is escaping from the home," she says. "It could be that it's less insulated in that spot, perhaps it's a garage as an example that's on an older home that was not insulated and dry walled, it might be an addition to the home, those could be some of the reasons that heat is escaping."

Weigel says she recommends that all residents have a look at their home through MyHEAT and find out if their home is in need of some upgrades to lower their heat score.

MyHEAT is only available to residential areas, excluding condo complexes and businesses.
