Okotoks has a young hockey community that is continuing to grow.

With limited ice available in the community that means only so many kids are about to be in the Okotoks Minor Hockey Association.

President Jeff Gough says at the beginning of the year it was looking like they were going to have to tell 79 kids that they weren't going to play this year because they didn't have the room or resources.

However, Gough says the executive team came together and had to think creatively.

"We looked outside the box by getting more ice time in centres outside of Okotoks and we made our teams a little bit bigger," Gough says.

"Something we looked at as an executive team is how can you tell a kid that he or she isn't allowed to play hockey?"

The solution the association found worked for this year, but they plan to still see an increase in kids in the upcoming years.

Jeff Faye, Vice President of programs, says they are going to have to find space for the kids coming in.

"There are 1,300 kids this year with a 5 percent growth, we are going to have to find those spaces for those kids somehow," Faye says.

Currently, they are maximizing the number of kids on a team.

On the initiation team right now there are 16 kids where a few years ago there was 12.

However, there are other possibilities to deal with the increases.

"We might have to shorten practices and get more rural ice to fit everyone in," Faye says.

Faye and Gough say there is a chance for a cap situation in the 2016-2017 season.
