The Okotoks Legion is expressing interest to the Town of Okotoks in leasing 8 McRae Street.

The Legion currently operates out of the Elks Hall and has handed a proposal to the Town in the hopes of leasing 8 McRae Street to have more space of their own.

Bob McLeod, president of the Okotoks Legion, says while extremely grateful for the Elks generosity, most legions have their own building and it's important members have a peaceful place to go.

"There are a surprising number veterans, not just from the military but from police and EMS, that do suffer from PTSD even in our local area and a number of them are members of our branch," he explains. "So we need a quiet place and while the Elks does provide a really comfortable lounge and good staff, we need a place of our own where we can look after our folk."

According to McLeod, 8 McRae Street is already well equipped for their needs with a wheel chair accessible entrance at the front, an open space with a kitchen and counter area, and smaller rooms that could serve as offices and storage. The building's proximity to the cenotaph and memorial wall on Veterans Way have also made it a prime location.

He says the three to five year lease would allow them to host more events while working on a more permanent solution.

"We've received AGLC approval for raffles, bingo, and casinos so yes the idea would be to raise enough money over those three to five years to purchase or build our own building."

The Town is accepting proposals from potential tenants for 8 McRae Street until Nov. 8.
