There are more than 100 veterans and currently serving members of the military, in the Foothills area.

Okotoks Legion Branch 291 tries tirelessly to provide support for all of them however, now the Okotoks Legion, is asking for the communities help.

Malcolm Hughes, Chairman of the Okotoks Legion Branch says, the needs of veterans are changing, and the Legion needs to change with them.

"We need somewhere that veterans can call home." Hughes says the Legion is looking for their very own building. "Veterans have some needs that we simply cannot meet at the moment out of the Elks Club.  They need a place where they can drop in, feel comfortable and just be together."

Currently, there is a Go Fund Me page raising money for a place where members can hang their hats.

Hughes says they will also do more fundraising outside of that.

"We have a member that has started a Go-Fund Me page, and we'll use any money that we're able to realize through that, towards procuring a new building." Hughes shares "We've just received our gaming license and we'll be starting to do raffles and things that will raise some money."

The Legion is also looking to increase membership and volunteers within the branch, Hughes says you don't have to be involved with the military to be a part of the Legion, and their support network.

"We have three membership classifications, the ordinary member being those of us who have served, either in police forces, first responders or military, and then there's one for those who have relatives who have served, those are associates members, then we have our affiliate membership which is for anyone with Canadian citizenship who simply supports what we do."

If you would like to be a member, but aren't a Canadian citizen, there is also a membership called a non-voting affiliate member.

In their search for a new building, the Legion is accepting any help that the community can provide, from personal donations, to volunteer hours.
