Okotoks will see 750 figure skaters come through town this weekend.

The Okotoks Skating Club is hosting the Star Skate Invitational, a Skate Canada sanctioned event, at Pason Centennial Arena.

Carrie Roberts with the Okotoks Skating Club says it's difficult for a club to be awarded an event of this calibre, but the recent twinning of the Pason arenas helped their cause.

"It came down to the top four clubs in Alberta to host and we won the bid. The reason being, we have a fantastic facility here in Okotoks to service such a competition. The electricity, the wifi, the actual arenas themselves, the staff, all help in providing the perfect environment for such a big event."

Roberts says the event is high calibre.

"There is a huge competitive factor to the competition, however, it's still in a friendly form in terms of sportsmanship and athletes taking a look at their own personal goals, but yes, there's always a first, second, and third."

There's no cost to watch the event and there will be raffle tables and prizes as well as the entertainment from the athletes.

The Star Skate Invitational takes place Fri.- Sun. from 8 a.m.- 9 p.m. at Pason Centennial Arena.
