Okotoks own Michela Sheedy is home from Toronto with an award under her belt.

Wednesday night she received the Notable Life award for Breakout Canadian Musician of the Year.

Sheedy, the only nominee from the country music industry, says it's an honour to receive the award.

"It's such an incredible honour to be recognized across Canada for something like this. It's truly humbling because I'd never thought that I'd be able to even be eligible for things like this so I was very grateful for everything. It was such a whirlwind."

The Notable Life Awards look to break the stigma around millennials by recognizing those who are hardworking and demonstrate excellent entrepreneurship.

Coming off the tail end of another artist development program that required her to campaign for votes, Sheedy says she's appreciative of the continued support that has been shown for her.

"The support from everybody in my community and across the country was overwhelming... I'll admit I'm not a fan of asking people for online votes and everybody pulled through for me. The support was overwhelming and just incredible. I really couldn't have done any of this without them."

Sheedy is a part of Canada's Music Incubator AE West artist development program which she attends full time at Studio Bell in Calgary.

She's continuing to focus on the program and hopes to release new music in the near future.
