As National Volunteer Week approaches, the Okotoks Food Bank is sharing its appreciation for its volunteers.

Volunteer Week kicks off Apr. 7 and the organization is honouring those who donate their time to make sure operations are running smoothly.

Tanis Gillis, Volunteer at the Okotoks Food Bank, says spending time with the organization is the highlight of her week.

"I love being there. There's a great camaraderie amongst our sorting teams. Just the feeling of being able to give something back to the community, the feeling of accomplishment of spending two hours sorting through the food, and seeing everything nicely organized on the shelves ready to go out and help our families in need."

Sandi Courtorielle, Volunteer Coordinator at the Okotoks Food Bank, says the organization wouldn't be able to operate without volunteers.

"Being a non-profit we couldn't hire that many people. The money we get we want it to go towards services and food for supporting our families. Our volunteers mean everything to us because most of the tasks are fast paced and challenging so it's not an easy job to do but we try to make it fun and enjoyable."

Gillis adds anyone who is on the fence about volunteering should dive in and give it a try.

"I got involved because I was just so grateful for living in the community that we do and there are so many amazing volunteers in this community who spend so many hours making it what it is, so anybody who has the opportunity to pitch in, I say just go for it."

The Okotoks Food Bank will be celebrating its volunteers with an event on Apr. 8 from 3- 6 p.m.
