First responders in Okotoks are joining forces for the annual Charity Check Stop.

The event collects food and cash donations for the Okotoks Food Bank and Rowan House Women's Emergency Shelter.

The check stop is a collaboration with the Okotoks Fire Department, Okotoks RCMP, Municipal Enforcement, EMS, and Victim Services who will be working with volunteers from the food bank and Rowan House.

Kai Kleckner, Peace Officer for the Town of Okotoks, says the event is a great way to build a relationship with the community while raising awareness.

"It's just a way for emergency services to interact with the community in a positive, light atmosphere. We're usually dealing with people for calls and this is just a friendly atmosphere that we can engage with the public and have a good time," he explains. "But, it is still a check stop and December is impaired driving month so we still will be dealing with any of those things that through the check stop."

Kleckner says the goal is to top what was raised last year.

"Last year it was a great turn out. I think we raised almost $6,000 in cash donations and about four truckloads of food so we're hoping to beat that this year."

Candy canes and hot chocolate will be on hand along with mascots to help get residents into the holiday spirit.

The Charity Check Stop takes place Dec. 18 from 2-4 p.m. on Milligan Drive at the Okotoks Rec Centre.
