The lack of moisture so far this winter has lead to dry conditions in the Foothills.

The Okotoks Fire Department wants to make sure residents are being cautious while they're outdoors to avoid accidentally igniting a fire.

Ken Thevenot, Okotoks Fire Chief, says the rules preached during the summer, like properly disposing cigarette butts, still apply.

"Watch the wind, it's always a factor for us that plays into how fast some of these grass fires can travel out in the field. Watch machinery, obviously that's a key one, and make sure in your fire pits you're burning nice dry wood."

Thevenot says the department is keeping a close eye on conditions.

"We don't have any fire advisories, restrictions, or bans at this time. There are some areas north and south of us that may be looking at some fire advisories but within our town limits we don't have any advisories right now. We are monitoring it very closely on a day to day basis."

A fire advisory is currently in place for Vulcan County, Wheatland County, and Rocky View County.
