Not only does spring signify the start of warmer weather on the way but it also marks the beginning of grassfire season.

The Okotoks Fire Department has started preparation by loading up trucks with the appropriate equipment.

Ken Thevenot, Okotoks fire chief, says residents need to be cautious about how they dispose of certain items.

"I want to remind motorists and individuals who are discarding smoking material to please be aware of how and where they discard it because a lot of times that can be the cause of grassfires in fields and even around our community."

Thevenot says early detection is key for the department in successfully dealing with any grassfires.

"If you see something that is not in the ordinary, different smoke, potentially flames, obviously report that right away," he says. "Early reporting of grassfires helps us to keep it in a smaller area."

On Tuesday the Heritage Pointe Fire Department responded to the first grassfire of the season in the Foothills just north of Okotoks.
