It's been a decade since the opening of Pason Centennial Arena and the Recreation Centre expansion and Okotokians celebrated the anniversary on Sunday.

The celebration offered free activities all day including aquafitness, a family skate, family swim, a ceremonial cake and prizes for the whole family to enjoy.

Jen Berry, client services representative at the Okotoks Rec Centre, says both facilities play a huge role in the community.

"In the past ten years over 8 million people have walked through the front doors of the Okotoks recreational centres so that impact is huge on our community, on this centre, on the region and we are super excited with the expansion and the addition of Pason since we've been able to provide more opportunities."

Berry adds the day was filled with thanks.

"The turn out was great and we were super excited for everyone that got to come down and enjoy the free activities. It was all about giving back to the community and saying thank you again to all the people that have made these rec centres the heart of the community."

Prizes included a $1,500 travel voucher from Pace Setter Travel and a collection of Sobey's products plus a gift card worth $1,000 combined.

The Okotoks Oilers and Bisons also contributed to the celebration as both teams played during the event and had a ceremonial puck drop for the anniversary.
