Okotoks residents can recognize the first responders, health care workers, and other essential workers in the community tonight.

The Ignite the Light event is inviting residents to stand outside on their front porchs or in their backyards so they can shine lights and make noise to show their appreciation for those who continue to put their own health on the line each day to serve the community.

Zach Adams, Community Events Specialist for the Town of Okotoks, says they were inspired by other municipalities.

"We saw some of these ideas about thanking the essential workers and first responders in other communities. A lot of municipalities were posting videos and their 'thank yous' and we figured it was time for Okotoks to have our own because we have our own first responders as we know and essential workers who are keeping the shelves stocked all day and we need to thank them."

Adams adds the Town has other plans to light up downtown this weekend.

"We also have the Municipal Centre being lit up in Alberta Health Services colours, green, white and blue, that's going to be all weekend, and then the big Christmas tree you see at the plaza stage normally for Light Up Okotoks we're actually going to have on as well for the nights of the weekend."

Residents can share their photos and videos to social media with the hashtag #okotoksstrongertogether.

Ignite the Light takes place Apr. 17 at 7 p.m.
