The Calgary Stampede Talent Search wrapped up Sunday night at the Boyce Theatre and Okotoks' very own Zasha Rabie went home as the runner up.

Rabie found out about the competition last year and made it to the preliminary round as one of the youngest competitors, but this year was a bit of a different story.

The 14-year-old performer took the second runner up prize of $750 in the amateur performing artists competition with contestants ranging from 13 to 21.

In her final act, Rabie performed "Alto's Lament", a piece about a girl who wants to break free of her alto role.

"Altos usually get the boring, one note parts in songs and musicals and it's about her wanting a solo and wanting to be a soprano, who sings higher," Rabie says. "She's very capable of doing that but she's always been told to sing alto and she's kind of just wants to break lose of that chorus girl aspect."

Rabie says her song choice is always a crowd pleaser and one she too enjoys.

"I absolutely love that song because it does show my range, I can hit all the notes in it fairly well. It's really fun for me to perform and it's such a good comical piece and audiences react wonderfully to it, so I just love it."

The first place prize of $10,000 went to 20-year-old Lizzy Munson who performed both Heart Shaped Box and Smells like Teen Spirit on the cello.

Rabie hopes to enter next year's Stampede Talent Search, so come Stampede 2017 keep your eyes and ears open for the talented Okotokian.
