Residents are being reminded they need to have the proper permits place before lighting up the sky with Canada Day fireworks.

According to Okotoks Bylaw residents are not allowed to possess, sell, or discharge fireworks without a permit from fire services.

Ken Thevenot, Okotoks Fire Chief, says the bylaw is in place for all levels of fireworks.

"There's high level and low level, so high level would be like you see at fireworks displays, they're larger, mortar type of fireworks, the one's that do the big bang," he explains. "The lower levels are like your small firecrackers and streamers so those aren't allowed as well."

He says fireworks for Town events go through a special process.

"Any high level fireworks we set off here at different special events, like Canada Day and Light Up Okotoks, we have a special insurance and permits we work out with the individual, the individual has to have the proper certifications to discharge any type of fireworks within the town limits."

Thevenot asks anyone who sees fireworks being discharged to give fire services a call.
