Students at the Alberta High School of Fine Arts and Foothills Composite High School are preparing for their first show of the school year.

Over 20 cast members, and countless Theatre Tech students have been working since September on their production of Cyrano de BurgerShack.

Bruce MacDonald, Theatre Arts Teacher at the Alberta High School of Fine Arts, says it's a pop musical based on a classic.

"It has taken the story of Cyrano de Bergerac, and modernized it and infused it with modern pop songs, everything from the Go-Go's from the eighties to Bruno Mars, so the music is all really familiar."

The play itself is new to the theatre scene, this will only be the second time its been produced in Alberta.

Cyrano de BurgerShack will also be the first performance in the new Alberta High School of Fine Arts' theatre, which was renovated over the last year.

MacDonald says working in a fresh space is a far cry from the old theatre he taught in Athabasca.

"Where I was before we had to rent the theatre, so you'd have to do everything in two weeks. Now we have time to take our time, build what we want to build, and have it for ourselves to work with, it's really nice, I'm really excited."

Cyrano de BurgerShack opens Dec. 14, with shows on Dec. 15,16 as well.

MacDonald hopes the community will come check out the new show, new theatre, and new theatre teacher.

"I'd love see everybody out, to see the new space, see the new production and get a chance for me to meet everybody too."

Tickets can be purchased at the door.
