Just five years since it's last expansion the Foothills Salvage Centre is due for another addition.

Construction of the building started yesterday, March 6, and by the end of the week Integrity Post Structures will have the new 56x40 shelter up and reasy for use.

FSRS general manager Candice Dupre says the shelter will be an open structure as it will have no doors and it will house outside items that have been salvaged from the landfill.

"It's going to have a lot of the stuff that goes outside in it, stuff like doors, windows, patio furniture and tires. Stuff that is getting snowed on and not everyone is able to see it. So essentially we just decided to organize that into a neat and tidy new building."

Dupre says during construction the hours of operation will not change but car donation drop offs will be altered until the work is done.

"The only thing to be aware of is that we are only accepting one car donations at a time. So what that means is driving into the west side entrance for delivery, only one car will be allowed in there at a time...So it is blocked off in behind the old building so no one can drive in or out of there. So essentially one car drives in and drops off, turns around and goes back out and it will be manned at this time."

Other than that small temporary change Dupre says the shelter will only create positives for the Foothills community.

"Once it's up and running it's only offering a larger variety of items to the public, to our community. So hopefully it gets out there that we do have a facility that is able to house all that stuff and we can in turn sell it for a cheap price to all our people in our community."

The new landfill site addition is proving that the Foothills Salvage Centre is having high success rates and is keeping up with their mandate of keeping as much as possible out of the landfill.

And with their year end approaching the FSRS team looks forward to donating their residual income to charities within the Foothills once again.

Construction of the new building should be finished by March 10, weather permitting.
