Okotoks homeowners will be able to see how efficient their homes are when it comes to heat, simply by a few mouse clicks.

Town council passed a budget amendment to launch a website called My Heat which hopes to help the town bring down its greenhouse gas footprint.

Dawn Smith, sustainability coordinator with the town, says the site uses infrared technology.

"What we do is there's thermal infrared data of our municipality of the residential homes," she says, "It's a map type of platform and if you're to zoom in on your house you could click on it and see exactly what parts of your house are releasing heat at higher levels."

The website will also offer tips and ideas for upgrades as well as links to local businesses who can help with the recommendations.

Smith says not only is My Heat beneficial for individual homes, but the for the town as a whole.

"From the town perspective, obviously energy efficiency reduces greenhouse gases so as a whole the more that residents improve their houses efficiency, we reduce our overall per capita greenhouse gas footprint."

Smith says My Heat is in the early development stages and hopes to see it launch sometime this fall.
