Municipal Elections are set to happen on October 16th and many people are wondering about the election process.

Cathy Duplessis, Legislative and Policy Services with the Town of Okotoks, says, step one is filling out a Form 3-A.

"You'll have to come see me, I will give you a form 3-A, which is the notice of intent to apply as a candidate." Duplessis explains "basically all that is, is your name, address and contact information.  Once you're done with that, you can start spending money or collecting money for your campaign."

Once you have completed and handed in the notice of intent, you then have to start campaigning through signs, events or however you'd like. Through your campaigning you will have to get nomination signatures.

Duplessis says you need a minimum of 5 valid nominations, by September 18th,  to continue on.

"The next step is nomination day, which is September 18th, from 10:00-12:00 noon, in the council chambers you'll need to have your nomination forms signed by at least 5 eligible electors to vote in the Town's election."

Running for Mayor or Councillor will cost you a fair bit of money though as Duplessis says there are deposits to be paid at nomination time.

"You'll also need to bring your deposit in at that time, that's $500 for the Mayor and $250 for Councillor." Duplessis shares "You get that back if you get elected, or you get at least half of the number of votes, of the elected Councillor with the least number of votes."

There will be a candidate information meeting scheduled for September 7th at 6 P.M. in which Duplessis will be going over everything that candidates and future candidates will need to know.
