You may have noticed the signage for the new Okotoks by-law that lowers the speed limit to 40 KM/H on all streets except on major routes in town.

But are the signs being noticed?

Okotoks Municipal Enforcement Manager Tim Stobbs says most residents are used to the drop in speed limits thanks to other communities having the 40KM/HR already before it was implemented town wide.

"The South side of Okotoks has been 40 KM/H for a quite long time," he says. "The areas that we're challenged with are our notifications coming into town, we're re-evaluating those all the time, the placements and whether not the sign sizes are correct."

Stobbs says it can be confusing to drivers switching from limit to another wondering when the limit by-law actually kicks in.

"We have just the main arterial routes that remain at 50 KM/H or 60 in Northridge Drive," he says if we find areas that we feel don't pose a risk and we could manage them we'll be back to council, this is a living breathing thing and we want to make sure it works right for our community."

Stobbs says most motorists have acknowledge the speed limit change though.

"We're finding overall that our speeds have not seen a significant jump or anything unreasonable above the 40 KM/H, just remember too that the weather hasn't really given us an opportunity to see how people will be operating on dry pavement either."

Stobbs says some of the signs may be too small for motorists to read and Municipal Enforcement is looking into making certain signs bigger.
