A horse found wandering the ditches of Highway 2 near the Okotoks Overpass late Friday night is back with his owners.

"Red" a gelding, and another mare were both wandering near the highway when they were spotted by a local farrier, who stopped and tried to round up the pair, but the mare ran onto the highway where it was struck and killed by oncoming traffic.

Enter Greg Alexander the Owner of Just Passing Horse Transport and Bereavement Services, who looked after the horse he called "Lucky" until the owners came forward thanks to a series of facebook posts.

"They were concerned and happy and everything else all at the same time. They came and dropped by and checked, and it was bittersweet that it was their horse, and they'd lost the other one in the meantime. So, they then had to go home and get their trailer and take him home."

The owners have decided to remain anonymous for the time being.

The people involved in the crash that killed the mare weren't injured.
