March has been designated as Red Cross month across the country.

Vice President of Red Cross Alberta Jenn McManus says it's an opportunity to recognize their volunteers for what they do.

"March has been designated to acknowledge the incredible work that's done across Canada as well as around the world on behalf of paid and volunteer staff of the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement.

She says the Red Cross was started in Switzerland by Henry Dunant and the organization has become a world leader in disaster response and preparedness.

She says the Red Cross has been around a lot longer than you might think.

"In Canada the Red Cross has been an auxiliary to government since 1909. We've been supporting vulnerable people in times of crisis, preparedness, water safety and first aid over many decades."

MacManus says of red cross Alberta says they do a lot more than teach CPR and water safety.

"The mission of the Red Cross is to support vulnerable people in times of crisis and in conflict zones. Our origin is protecting those wounded on the battlefield and now we work in prevention, safety, disasters, emergencies and health and community wellness."

She says the Red Cross are always looking for volunteers to help in the cause.
